Olhão

Olhão da Restauração, a town located in the eastern Algarve, is the capital of the Ria Formosa.

It is the seat of the municipality and is divided into 4 parishes: Moncarapacho and Fuseta, Olhão, Pechão and Quelfes.

The main characteristic of this city is its architecture inspired by the Arab model, due to the maritime travels of its residents who went fishing in the Moroccan area. They built their houses in the shape of a cube, with whips and belvederes to better watch the sea, lacy chimneys becoming known as "cubist city". The narrow and winding streets contain mysteries that gave rise to their legends (Arraul, Menino dos Olhos Grandes, Moura Encantada, Floripes and Marim).

Main Church of Olhão

The building of "Nossa Senhora do Rosário" church, now the main church of Olhão began in 1698 and opened to worship, still unfinished in 1715. It is an imposing building and is considered an attraction by tourists visiting the historical area of Olhão, downtown, where it is located. In the second half of the 18th century, its main façade was reformulated, with the addition of a triangular crowning. Inside the church there is a nave and a slightly protruding transept, there are five altars. The main chapel has an altarpiece and a triumphal arch in gilded woodwork, a ceiling decorated with a fresco and an image o f"Nossa Senhora do Rosário".

 

Fishing Port

This place is a must for those who like to admire the work of fishermen, you can watch the arrival of boats loaded with fish and also the many fishing gears (clay pots to catch octopus, net traps to catch lobsters, etc.),

 

Markets

The Municipal Markets of Olhão are part of the market of vegetables to the east and the market of fish to the west, are one of the ex-libris of this city, due to its architecture and the origin of the gates in cast iron, with longitudinal plan, the markets are composed of two rectangular spaces of rounded vertices, the 8 towers with copper domes. Its construction began in 1912 and was inaugurated three years later. They were subjected to rehabilitation works and reopened to the public in 1998 keeping the exterior facades.

 

Maritime Commitment

The Maritime Commitment of Olhão currently hosts the City Museum. It is a building of great historical value and exhibits during the year several temporary or permanent exhibitions on themes related to the city and the municipality. The building, with two floors and three fronts, reveals a careful treatment of the frontispiece.

This project was created with the intention of supporting the fishermen of the city and owned, on the ground floor, pharmacy and a butcher's shop to serve the seafarers. On the noble floor was located the room of the dispatches that presents painting in the wooden lining of the roof of which deserves highlight the coat of arms of the royal portuguese.

 

Chapel of "Senhor dos Aflitos"

 

The baroque chapel is located at the back of the main church, it consists of two floors, the upper one being a loggia. This chapel has a tile panel with the Crucifixion of Christ in the center. Known as a place of worship for thousands of people, both residents and visitors, they pray there moved by their faith in the Lord of the Afflicted. Sometimes believers offer objects in wax in the form of the part of the human body that is sick, and for which they appeal The baroque chapel is located at the back of the main church, it consists of two floors, the upper one being a loggia. This chapel has a tile panel with the Crucifixion of Christ in the center. Known as a place of cult for thousands of people, both residents and visitors, they pray there moved by their faith in the Lord of the Afflicted. Sometimes believers offer objects in wax in the form of the part of the human body that is sick, and for which they appeal for healing. At any time of the day or night it is possible to find believers saying their prayers in front of this chapel.

 

Events

 

Every Saturday morning the farmers of the region come to sell their organic products in the outdoor space of the markets and the air is filled with joy with the colors and smells of the products and the conversations between sellers and customers.

 

Seafood Festival

From August 10th to 15th the main event of the city takes place... the Seafood Festival! This takes national and international artists to the city stage and is an excellent opportunity to enjoy the gastronomy that the city has to offer.

 

On June 16th, it is a municipal holiday and there are always some cultural, sports and musical activities promoted by the municipality.

 

Depending on the season, the municipality offers an entertainment program with music, allegorical parades, etc.: Christmas, New Year's Eve, Carnival, Easter, Fisherman's Day, Women's Day, Children's Day among others.

 

 

Beaches

 

Armona  Island

There are regular routes to this island via the Olhão Quay. The island has several support equipment (restaurants, bars, camping, beach support, mini-market). The beach is guarded during the bathing season.

 

Cavacos Beach

 Encontra-se a cerca de 3km da cidade de Olhão, poderá chegar a esta praia através da EN. 125  seguindo na direção de Aldeia de Marim.  Esta praia ainda não possui equipamentos de apoio e não é vigiada.

 

Fuseta Island

There are regular routes to this island through Fuseta Pier. It has several support services (restaurants, bars, toilets, bathing and recreational facilities). This beach is watched during the bathing season.
